May I ask a favor from Oppo?

So some super cereal shit has gone down the last few days. I'd like to ask one and only one favor from Oppo. Can we try our hardest to keep the arguments about feminism to a minimum? I understand how important feminism is and the purpose it serves but when I come here I don't like having this tension around. I come for cars and to have silly conversations and possibly even LEARN something about cars. Sometimes the drama is fun to read but I'm also in hs so I listen to drama all the time.

So all I ask is to try to keep the arguments about feminism and mysogyny to a minimum.

Since quite a few people can't comprehend that fairness =/= equality, probably not. And the fact that none of us are equal, equality is genetically and humanly impossible, and everything being equal would be inopportune to those fighting for it, so they would complain about that too.

How about we broaden this and just ask that everyone act civil and mature, regardless of the subject.

Oppo is full of people from different walks of life with different world views and opinions.

As a result, there are going to be disagreements and that's never going to change.

I'll take a risk and admit that for the most part, my opinions tend to fall closer to the side Clay was coming from and I don't give a damn what you (by you, I mean anyone who's reading this, not specifically you norsk) think about that.

That being said, I have no intention of getting into an argument with anyone here (or anywhere else online really, because internet) or getting all bent out of shape because some other Opponaut holds a differing opinion.

My philosophy with fellow Opponauts is the same as my philosophy with my friends, family, and coworkers, many of whom hold views wildly different from my own: If I enjoy interacting with you, then I'm going to do so, despite any differences we may have. If I don't enjoy interacting with you, I'm still going to treat you with dignity and respect, even if you don't afford me the same courtesy.

That's my only 2 cents on this issue and any others like it past, present, or future.

I'm pretty sure you're still trying to call me into question, without being confrontational about it, you've already killed your credibility with everyone on here from your temper tantrums earlier. If you want have a debate, learn a thing or teach me something feel free to email me. otherwise, pick an actual book about gender equality, feminism or hell even start reading jurisprudence on the 14th amendment and quit bringing Oppo down.

Because if we ignore the problem and just stop talking about it then it'll just go away right? I love cars, I really really do; I spend most of my free time thinking about them or working on them. I want to share that hobby with as many people as I can. Unfortunately as a whole the car community is one of the most heavily male groups of people on the planet, and I think that is largely due to the "good old boy" nature of a lot of car enthusiasts. That makes me sad and frustrated. Women make up 50% of the population, yet a far smaller percentage of car enthusiasts. Do you really think none are driven away by booth girls and NSFW posts, and the casual sexism surrounding car culture? We bitch and moan about how car culture is dying, and no one cars about cars anymore yet we continue to alienate 50% of the population. This is not sustainable.

You say it's going nowhere, I've seen a marked change in oppo for the better, as frustrating as it still is sometimes. A few months ago posts bitching about feminists and jezebel and making casual sexist jokes were totally commonplace, acceptable and no one would call you out on it. Now you'll get called out on it, which may lead to more drama, and tension but hopefully also to less ignorance and prejudice.

We all make mistakes. I'd recommend deleting your post, but do whatever we want.

All you're doing is creating more drama again just as everything has calmed down. It's unnecessary and puts the whole feel of the community down. We had a few solid hours of happy normal oppo posting then bam, let's start shit again.

If you want to make a post like this do it on your personal blog and post a link for those who are interested.

In short, I'd love to ban them at this point. Logistically, however, that becomes a very difficult thing to do, because Kinja simply isn't set up with the tools we need to make a blanket-wide ban on them. Thus, we do the best we can to discourage them and talk to users on the side about them.
